According to Newzoo, the top 100 countries in the world by game revenue includes:

  • 1.7 billion gamers
  • $81.5 billion in revenue for 2014 this year
  • The US is the top country for game revenue in 2014 at $20.5 billion
  • Japan monetizes the most per person online at $120.20

I ran the numbers differently than they did. You can see the ranks of game revenue by country on the left, but I chose to look at it differently. I divided the revenue by the online population of each country. This gave me the RPPO (Revenue Per Person Online) – since I figure this is a good gauge of technology and that these people are also likely playing on mobile devices. Then I ran the ARPD (Average Revenue Per Day) based on that number divided by 365. It results in some interesting data.

For me, this is most interesting for geographic (soft) launches of mobile games. If we can look at how a game monetizes in specific country or two, we can make a more educated guess about how it might monetize given the propensity to spend per country. Of course it isn’t flawless, but it sure does give an interesting set of benchmarks to measure against. Here’s the full list.

SuperDataResearch put out some recent numbers about the digital collectible card game market. Here’s the data:

The audience and revenue numbers are:

  • 53 Million Monthly Active Users (MAU) playing collectible card games ($4.1 Billion in revenue)
  • $2.8 Billion of the revenue is for physical card games (68.3 percent) and $1.3 Billion is related to digital collectible card games (31.7 percent)
  • 18 Million MAU playing collectible card games in the U.S. (1.4 Billion in revenue)
  • 2.5 Million MAU in Germany ($237 Million in revenue)
  • 2.3 Million MAU in the U.K. ($180 Million in revenue)
  • 2 Million in France ($158 Million in revenue
  • 1.8 Million in Russia ($55 Million in revenue)
  • 1.6 Million in Italy ($166 Million in revenue)
  • 1.6 Million in Spain ($154 Million in revenue)
  • 900 Thousand in Poland ($39 Million in revenue)

NOTE: Collectible card games are huge in Japan, however SuperData Research didn’t include any info for the country.

Here are a couple of other bits:

  • 12 Percent of digital collectible card game players convert to paying users in the U.S.
  • Average revenue per paying player in the U.S. is $27, again for digital collectible card games

According to a new report from GlobalCollect and NewZoo:

  • The global games market is this year expected to reach $70.4 Billion in 2013, an increase of 6% over 2012
  • MMO games will account for $14.9 billion, or 21.2%, of global game revenue in 2013
  • Asia Pacific (APAC) is now the largest games market in the world
  • 34% of global game revenue comes from APAC
  • 64% of MMO revenues now come from APAC
  • The three fastest growing countries in terms of game revenue are Malaysia (121% growth over the past year), Thailand (104% growth) and South Korea (100%  growth)
  • The top 10 countries by average transaction value in video gaming transactions all come from Europe and the Middle East.
  • GlobalCollect predicts:
  • Mobile gaming will grow by more than 35%
  • MMO games market will grow by more than 14%
  • Northern Africa and Central America are emerging hubs for video game fraud

According to NPD, 2012 digital game sales were:

  • U.S. -$5.9 billion (40 percent of total U.S. dollars spent on games, up from 28 percent in 2010)
  • U.K. – $1.7 billion
  • Germany – $1.4 billion
  • France – $1 billion.

For 2012, the U.S. breaks down as:

  • New retail games – $7.1 billion
  • Used games – $1.59 billion
  • Digital games and DLC -$2.22 billion
  • Game subscriptions – $1.05 billion
  • Social network games – $544 million
  • Game rentals -$198 million
  • Mobile games -$2.11 billion
  • Digital full games and DLC combined grew 33.9 percent for the year
  • Subscriptions grew 12.9 percent
  • Mobile games grew 10.4 percent
Here are some other random points and findings from the analyst panel at GDC 2013:
  • The UK has the highest percentage of console players
  • France prefers portable consoles
  • Germany prefers computers
  • US is most partial to gaming on mobile and tablet platforms
  • In the US, 27 percent of mobile gamers pay
  • In Europe, 40 percent of mobile gamers pay
  • U.K. average spending on mobile games is $16
  • U.S. average spending on mobile games is $9
  • In China, Mobile game spending is projected to reach$1 billion this year, and $2.8 billion in 2016.

According to SuperData:

  • The European client-based MMO market totalled $1.3 billion in 2012
  • Three publishers dominate the space, generating 70% of all revenue
  • Germany is the largest European client-based MMO market with €474 Million in 2012 sales
  • The UK  client-based MMO market was €281 Million in 2012
  • France was the third largest country in terms of client-based MMO  at €222 Million

NPD Group released new data from their Q2 2012 Games Market Dynamics Report.

  • U.S. consumers spent $1.0 billion on new physical video and PC game software in the second quarter of 2012 (April – June)

Digital Content Sales Growth

  • Digital content (full game and add-on content downloads, subscriptions, mobile games and social network games) reached $1.47 billion in the U.S. for the quarter
  • Digital content (full game and add-on content downloads, subscriptions, mobile games and social network games) reached $983 million in the UK, France and Germany for the quarter
  • Digital content sales were up 17% in the U.S. over the same quarter in 2011

Used Game Sales and Rental Market

  • U.S. consumers spent $386 million on used games and rentals
  • UK, France and Germany consumers combined spent $243 million on used games and rentals

Newzoo released their 2011 MMO Games Market Report. Here are some key data point (focused on SCiFi MMO games):

  • 36% of 39 million active MMO gamers in the US play games that have a SciFi or Space theme: 14 million in total
  • In European and Emerging markets, SciFi is less popular than in the US, with 27% and 26% of all MMO gamers respectively, but the number of players is still significant totaling 9.5 and 11.5 million
  • 68% of American SciFi MMO gamers play Free-to-Play MMOs
  • 16% of American SciFi MMO gamers play Pay-to-Play MMOs
  • 16% play both Free-to-Play and Pay-to-Play MMO games
  • Most Free-to-Play gamers play for free but the number of SCiFi MMO gamers spending money in Free-to-Play MMO games outnumbers the 4.5 Million Pay-to-Play gamers
  • China and Korea combined score best with 38% of MMO gamers or 41 Million consumers playing SCiFi MMO games
  • In China and Korea 53% choose Pay-to-Play games, but almost all of these players also play Free-to-Play MMO games
  • In Brazil, Mexico and Russia 80% of all SciFi MMO gamers only play Free-to-Play MMOs
  • The UK is the largest SciFi MMO market in Europe in terms of number of players: 2.7 Million. Despite “only” 1.7 Million SciFi gamers in Germany, total money spent is almost equal for both countries

PopCap Games announced the results of the National Gamers Surveys which found more than half of all adults in the United Kingdom, France and Germany play games.

  • Over 153 million men and women are estimated to play consoles, casual games, social network games and mobile games
  • Gamers split their time between all types of devices – but spend more money on console games
  • The United Kingdom has the highest ratio of gamers, with 68% of men and 59% of women playing games
  • In Germany, 63% of men and 54% of women play games
  • In France, 61% of men and 52% of women play games
  • The French that spend the most money per player, spending an average of £22.3 per month
  • Players in the United States spend an average of £17.5 each month
  • In the United Kingdom players spend an average of £18.6 per player
  • Germans spend £13.9 per month
  • In Europe, games are most popular in the age group  between 10 and 20-years-old, with 87% of 10 – 20-year-olds in in the U.K., 81% in France and 78% in Germany all playing games
  • Behind the US, which spends £13.2bn per year on gaming, the biggest gaming economy is Germany (£4bn from 24m payers), followed by the United Kingdom (£3.6bn from 16.1m payers), and France (£2.8bn from 10.4m payers)
  • European gamers spend more money towards gaming on console games than on casual, social or mobile gaming, with German gamers spending 34% of their gaming money (£4bn 2011 estimate) on console games compared to 8% on casual game sites, 4% on social networks and 8% on mobile games
  • U.K. gamers spend 44% of their gaming money (£3.6bn) on console games compared to 11% on casual game sites, 6% on social networks and 10% on mobile games
  • French gamers also spend 44% of their gaming money (£2.8bn) on console games compared to 10% on casual game sites, 6% on social networks and 10% on mobile games

The research was conducted by Newzoo in co-operation with Survey Sampling International Inc.

Newzoo recently released 2010 market estimates for the games industry in Germany. They were different from the BIU/GfK numbers below, but also show some deeper analysis of the industry beyond traditional reported boxed sales:

BIU/GfK Numbers:

  • 1.59 billion Euros for boxed sales and downloads (including mobile phones), split into
  • 884 million Euros for console games (not handhelds)
  • 443 million Euros for PC games (boxed and downloads)
  • 264 million Euros  for mobile devices (mobile phones and console handhelds)
  • 194 million Euros for “fees for online / browser games”
  • 94 million for virtual goods

Newzoo’s numbers:

  • German 2010 total consumer spending was 4.3 billion Euros
  • German consumer spending is expected to grow to 4.6 billion Euros in 2011
  • Newzoo’s data includes imported games (those purchased from outside of Germany – 180 million Euros
  • Pre-owned games – 220 million Euros
  • Downloadable console content (DLC) – 80 million Euros
  • Newzoo’s console total is 1.5 billion Euros
  • There are 13 million MMO gamers in Germany in 2011

 

Newzoo’s 2011 National Gamers Surveys has some interesting data derived from surveys of people in Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Spain, the US, and key EU countries.  Active players in the following countries are listed below as well as the percentage of the user base paying for virtual goods:

  • Mexico – 16 Million (47% paying)
  • Brazil – 35 Million (57% paying)
  • Russia – 38 Million (53% paying)
  • USA – 145 Million (43% paying)
  • U.K. – 31 Million (52% paying)
  • Germany – 36 Million (66% paying)
  • France – 24 Million (42% paying)
  • Spain – 15 Million (42% paying)
  • The Netherlands – 8 Million (39% paying)
  • Belgium – 4 Million (43% paying)

Some other interesting findings:

  • At least 75% of the active internet population – 46 million in Brazil and Russia as well – play games.
  • Total virtual item transactions grew 103% in Russia and 228% in Brazil in 2010 over 2009
  • 80% of online gamers use virtual currency
  • Only 15% of gamers ever bought Facebook credits
